Chapter 22

Hazel

Why is Tripp glaring at Adam? For that matter, why is he glaring at me?

Chapter 23

Tripp

“So, Friday night for the date?” the man asks.

“Friday should work—” Hazel starts to say with a big smile pointed right at him. She has both dimples showing, and her eyes are twinkling. The guy is a goner. You can’t help but get pulled in by Hazel’s blue eyes.

“Did you forget you have something going on Friday?” I don’t know why I asked that. I’m going off-script. Off the best friend script.

Hazel looks at me with a strange—and dangerous—look in her eyes.

“It doesn’t matter.”

“Umm, actually, it does.” I chuckle because there’s no way in hell I’m letting her go on a date with this guy.

“You have a date,” I say firmly. “With me.”

Her eyes widen in surprise, and I feel the burst of victory. Aha. Finally rendered her speechless. Heck, I rendered myself speechless.

Hazel turns to me, folding her arms across her chest as she glares at me. “You have got to be kidding me. Now you choose to do this? Now?”

She practically rolls her eyes.

“Please excuse him. He’s been away from town for too long.” She grinds out that last part with a fierce tone. “He forgot about the auction dates for the benefit dinner.”

Auction dates?

I stare at the back of her head since she’s practically wedged herself between Adam and me.

The man looks back and forth between us, looking utterly confused.

Hazel is glaring at me. That is not a good sign. She takes a step toward me, her boots clicking against the concrete floor of the coffee shop.

“Tripp Sharpe.”

I sincerely debate fleeing before she catches me. “Hazel.” I hold my hands up in the air.

“Hazel, don’t do something that I know you’re thinking about doing.”

She narrows her eyes at me, “I haven’t lost my temper since high school. But I’m willing to break that streak.”

The flashing anger in her eyes tells me she’s not kidding.

I lean back to watch the man leave the coffee shop. He pauses and lifts his hand in a wave in my direction before he walks out the door. When I turn back to Hazel, she’s still glaring daggers at me. “I’m wondering if I need to get out of arm’s reach or leave the building entirely.”

“You marched into my conversation, took it over, and ruined my chance at possibly having a date with a cute boy.”

I rest my elbow on the chair nonchalantly. “A boy, really? Because I think you should look for a man.” My insightful little comment does not go over well with her.

Her eyes widen, her nostrils flare, and I turn around to hurry back to the table. I sit down behind my laptop. I’m careful to keep the table in between us, in case she decides to go all hawkish on me.

“You are in big trouble,” she whispers threateningly to me across the table. She plants both her hands on the surface, leaning forward. Blonde hair slips out of her topknot, falling around her face.
